Yoga in Nice: 8 studios to discover

cours studio yoga nice

I discovered yoga in 2017 by practising miracle morning and at that time, yoga studios in Nice could be counted on the fingers of one hand before slowly but surely developing. Like Heels dance, yoga is one of my favourite activities and it has greatly helped me to improve my breathing and concentration.

In 2021, I joined the Metropolitan CAP 3000 Club, which offered superb yoga classes and still does. At the same time, I sometimes practised wild yoga with a.yoga.story alias Marie Blanchet, which means outdoor yoga on the beaches of Nice at sunrise – incredible! Since then, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see that so many yoga studios in Nice have sprung up. There are so many that you don’t even know which studio to choose, each one has its own speciality: some offer Hatha Yoga while others offer Bikram Yoga. There’s no secret, the best way to choose is to try out and feel the feeling with the teacher and the type of yoga taught. Personally, I prefer to practise a more dynamic form of yoga, such as vinyasa or ashtanga, whereas yin yoga is much too slow for me.

The different types of yoga and their benefits

Post-natal yoga is a gentle way for new mothers to reconnect with their bodies after giving birth, through breathing, postures and awareness of the pelvic and abdominal muscles. It also helps to release tension.

Yin yoga is a gentle, restorative form of yoga that focuses on breathing to calm the mind and relax the nervous system.

Iyengar yoga is a form of hatha yoga created by B.K.S, a world-renowned yoga master. This type of yoga is based on the in-depth practice of asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing). It is based on the precise physical alignment of the body in specific postures, and requires the use of props such as straps, chairs and bricks. It is particularly suitable for people with injuries.

Hatha yoga consists of a series of new, rather static and sustained postures accompanied by breathing techniques (one of the best-known sequences is the sun salutation). The aim of this practice is to balance body and mind.

Asthanga yoga is based on the synchronisation of breath and movement, and on fluid, dynamic execution. This yoga is best suited to more or less experienced practitioners.

Vinyasa yoga is a fairly dynamic form of yoga based on a series of postures performed at a fairly fast pace. It is a creative form of yoga in which there is no pre-established sequence, which allows the postures to be varied. This leaves the teacher free to propose his or her own sequences.

Power yoga is a sporty, dynamic type of yoga that strengthens the muscles. The sequences are derived from vinyasa yoga but are performed more intensely and quickly. Power yoga is a type of westernised yoga in which the spiritual aspects are secondary.

Hot yoga or bikram yoga (named after its founder) is a type of yoga practised in a room heated to 40°C. This type of yoga works the muscles in depth and helps to improve flexibility, leg strength and balance. The heat facilitates the movements, which become deeper and less dangerous as the muscles are heated. However, this practice is not suitable for everyone.
